They made the trip to Elk Grove, crawling in freeway traffic, trying not to lose their minds from the monotony. In other words, it was just another day in rush hour traffic.

When they reached the Haddad family residence, Sadie’s mind and insides were in turmoil. She had never delivered news of the death of a loved one before, nor did she know what to do or say. All she knew was that she usually said the right thing but in the wrongest way possible, if “wrongest” was even a word, which it wasn’t.

They pulled up to the house; Brad shut off the car and looked at her. “This is a death notice, Agent Gray.”

“I know.”

“The best thing for everyone is for you to not speak beyond saying that you’re sorry for their loss. No other statements, no questions, no comments, and especially no interruptions.”

She opened her hands, stared at him like he’d gone mad, and said, “I got it, bro.”

“Don’t call me bro.”

They exited the car, walked up to a modest 90’s-style, two-story stucco house, and knocked. When a young man answered the door, Brad said, “Are either of your parents at home?”

“Who are you?” he asked.

“The FBI,” Sadie said. “We’d like to speak to your parents, please.”

Brad looked like he was about to have a migraine. He turned to her, and her eyes widened in response. “Sorry, it’s just that these kids have no manners these days.”

“Do you hear yourself?” he whisper-hissed. “You can’t even follow simple instructions.”

A woman came to the door and said, “Are you the FBI, or has my son’s imagination gotten the best of all of us?”

She was a nice-looking woman with a genial smile, kind eyes, and an affable air. Soon that would vanish, and she would be dragged down by the weight of a broken heart.

“No, we’re definitely the FBI,” Brad confirmed, showing her his credentials. “This is my partner, Agent Gray. May we speak with you inside?”

“What’s this about?” she asked, a tinge of worry in her eyes.

“I’m afraid I have news about your daughter, Baylin.”

The woman swallowed, became very still, and spoke with a weakness to her voice that could only come from the anticipation of pain. “Is… is she all right?”

“May we come inside?” Sadie asked.

She turned to her son and said, “Go to your room.”

“And do what?” he asked.

“Count the cracks in the wall or pick up your clothes—your choice, just go.” Her eyes were already starting to water. She wiped them in case she was wrong.

They went into the living room, and she offered them drinks, which they politely declined.

“Why is the FBI visiting me about my daughter?” she finally asked. “Is she in some sort of trouble?”

“We just left the Sacramento crime lab where coroners identified her body.”

“The coroner?” she asked, breathless, as if she couldn’t believe it.

Brad nodded and said, “I’m so sorry.”

For a while, she just nodded, her face crinkling and contorting, her eyes wet and soon draining down her face. Her body shook, and she held back as best as she could, but then she stood, went to the other room, and let it out.
